Artist of the moment……..Nicholas de Stael

Nicholas de Stael was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in the year 1914. His father was a lieutenant in the army. During the time of the Russian revolution his family fled to Poland.Both of his parents died whilst he was young and de Stael was sent to Brussels, Belgium to live with another Russian family.

For his artistic education Nicholas de Stael attended the Royal  Academy of Art located in Brussels, Belgium.

His first wife died from malnutrition as times were tough during the end of the second world war.

The artist was just coming into a world wide recognition in the 1950s when he began to fall apart. Plagued by depression and exhaustion Nicholas de Stael jumped from his eleventh story studio at killed himself at the age of 41 years old in 1955.

The artist inspired many students including Ed Clark.

Artist of the moment…… Ed Clark

Ed Clark was born in the year 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana . Clark is one of few African American Abstract Expressionist painters. For his artistic education Ed Clark attended the Art Institute of Chicago and also studied in Paris at the Academy de La Grande Chaumiere. Clark began as a realist painter but is renown for his work with vibrant color in his abstract paintings. Clark employs the palette knife in many of his works.

Clark is the first African American painter to be given credit for working on irregular shaped canvas.

Prior to visiting Paris Clark worked in a more representational manner. He then met Nicolas de Stael a French painter who was born in Russia and living in Paris.

Ed Clark has works in many prestigious collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Clark liked to work in Paris and New York City.

Ed Clark developed a great style of abstract painting that emphasized color and movement. His works have a great fluidity of motion.

Artist of the moment…….Kenny Random

Kenny Random is an Italian street artist renown for his work with the silhouette figure surrounded by repeating colorful shapes sometimes butterflies or sometimes just a simple circular shape. Random is based out of Padova, Spain.

Kenny Random is successful as a printmaker working in editions of 150 prints on many occasion.

Most prints priced between $250 and $500.

What I enjoy about this artist is his portrayal of the figure that seems to be in touch with his surroundings.  A silhouette from this artist left in black and white allows the viewer to imagine how they might feel in place of the silhouetted character surrounded by wonderful repeating shapes of colour.
