Artist of the moment…..Balthus

Balthus was born Balthasar Klossowski de Rola in Paris , France in the year 1908. Balthus was a world renown painter of the figure and in particular the female figure. His father was an art historian and his mother a painter. His early works depicted young sometimes innocent looking female girls in provocative poses.

Balthus worked with an artist recently posted about, the poster artist Adolph Cassandre, in designing stage decorations.

Balthus had a great showing at the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City in 1956.

Price range information: Works range from $50,000 for works in pencil to more than $3 million for an oil painting.

He was married to an aristocrat from Switzerland first. Balthus also took a second wife in 1965. A young woman 35 years younger than himself that he met on a trip to Japan. This fact was another reason the artist was seen as mysterious.

Balthus passed away in 2001 at the age of 92 years old. His funeral was attended by many stars including Bono.

What an eccentric and well loved and respected artist! Balthus has been an inspiration to many artists including James Kalm.

Artist of the moment…..Matsubara Naoko

Matsubara Naoko is a world renown printmaker born in Tokushima, Japan in the year 1937.

For her collegiate studies the artist studied all over the world. Matubara Naoko earned a bachelors degree from the Kyoto University of the Applied Arts. She then attended Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania earning a MFA. She also studied at the Royal College of Art located in London, England.

She has been part of the teaching faculty at the Pratt Institute.

Her sister is a writer and the two have made collaborative efforts.

Matsubara Naoko was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

Naoko is included in many prominent collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the British Museum located in London, England, and the Chicago Art Institute.

Artist of the moment….Andrew Schoultz

Andrew Schoultz is an exciting contemporary artist born in Wisconsin, United States in the year 1975. For his artistic education Schoultz attended the Academy of Art located in San Francisco, California. His work is a mix of mediums on most occasions and the artist works in very large formats, some recent pieces being more than 20 by 10 feet long.

Schoultz found inspiration for his working style from map makers based in Germany during the 15th century.

Andrew Schoultz does paintings, mixed media collage works using very creative ideas such as shredded currency, murals, and installations.

The artist is based out of San Francisco, California.

Some themes frequently used by the artist include spirituality, imperialism, war, and politics.

I enjoy this artist for his great sense of design. Also the scale of his works are quite staggering. His work is very balanced, he isn’t trying to dominate the conversation, he wants to get the viewer to think about their surroundings and world.
