New Collage by me!!! The Modernist Art Enthusiast…..

So I enjoy looking at the collector’s house as art. With such great magazines like Western Art and Architecture and American Art Collector and other  fashion and interior design magazines, we get a very good idea of what collectors display and what the interiors of their houses (mansions) look like. I really enjoy this, to imagine where a painting of yours might spend the rest of your life is very intriguing to me as an artist!

This work features 3 artists, can you name/ find them.

First off we have the yellow glass piece in front. I used a sheet of PVC paper for the base. The artist represented here is Dale Chihuly. Chihuly is currently the United States most popular and renowned glass artist. I enjoy his creative shapes and use of color found in his glass. I tried to make a fun shape for the glass work. Chihuly wears a patch as the result of a car accident in which his head broke through the windshield cutting his face. He was my post earlier today!

Ellsworth Kelly, the painting closest to the staircase. Ellsworth Kelly was born in 1923 in Newburgh, New York. He turned 90 earlier this year! Kelly is a painter and sculptor who is known for his simple abstract works with bold and bright color.

Eero Aarnio is a Finnish interior designer and decorator born in Helsinki, Finland in the year 1932. Aarnio is perhaps best known for his furniture designs with very modern looking works of art. Represented here is his ball chair design. Aarnio won the American Industrial Designer award in 1968. He loved to design furniture based on simple geometric shapes and forms.

The size is 12 inches by 12 inches!

Next up I will posting some caricatures!

Artist of the moment…….Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is the foremost glass artist in the United States. Dale Chihuly was born in the year 1941 in Tacoma, Washington. Chihuly has brought glass to the level of fine art sculpture with the vastness of his works.

For his collegiate education Chihuly attended the University of Puget Sound, the University of Washington in Seattle where he earned a bachelor degree in interior design. Chihuly went on to earn a master’s of science degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The artist also received a masters of fine arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Chihuly wears the patch as the result of a car accident that left him blind in that eye. His head broke through the windshield and his face was severely cut. This accident took place in 1975.

Has a team of assistants do his work due to a shoulder injury he got whilst bodysurfing in 1979.

In this clip we visit a show from 2010 that took place in Nashville, Tennessee. Many botanical and floral forms are shown here:

In this clip an appearance on CBS:

As a small business the latest numbers given were annual sales just surpassing $29 million dollars. Chihuly is a great success as a businessman.

I will be posting a new collage that is just finishing drying featuring this artist later today!

Artist of the moment……Aleta Rossi Steward

Aleta Rossi Steward is a contemporary artist best known for her oil paintings of birds and botanical imagery. Some birds frequently depicted include ospreys and herons. I first noticed the artist for her skill at painting flowers and was quite surprised to see the amount of life she put into the birds she painted. Steward grew up in the New York City area. Steward works in oils and sometimes tempera.

Below a wonderful selection of works by Aleta Steward:

For her artistic education Aleta Steward attended the Art Student’s League of New York City where she studied under Frank Mason. Below a great example of Frank Mason’s style of artwork. A portrait of Sir Winston Churchill.

Steward is based out of Brewster, Massachusetts.

Some other painters of birds profiled here include Isabelle Du Toit and Angie Renfro. I enjoy Renfro as she paints birds hanging out on telephone wires. Most artists mix birds with floral imagery, but her work is eloquent and causes the viewer to slow down and look for other bird shapes that may exist on the flower. Below is a painting done by Angie Renfro.

Winner of many awards from the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Another aspect I enjoy about Steward’s work is the combination of lively objects like birds, with very old and sometimes decaying objects that have very worn out textures, such as wood.

Artist of the moment……Nola Zirin

Nola Zirin is an American artist born in New York City  renown for her abstract paintings. Zirin paints with oils and enamels on wood panel or canvas. For her collegiate studies Zirin attended New York University. In addition to painting Zirin produces mixed media collages.

A big influence was the printmaker Donn Steward. Steward is an American artist renown for his abstract imagery. Steward’s work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.

I love the many forms of media used by the artist. Some oil paint, some pastels, a photograph, squiggly and exciting lines and even layers of paint are put on and scraped off to come up with some amazing images! I love the organic shapes used in her abstract works.
