Artist of the moment……Ohno Bakufu

Ohnu Bakuful was a wonderful painter and printmaker born in Tokyo, Japan in the year 1888. Ohno Bakufu loved to paint flowers. Another favorite subject for Bakufu was fish. The artist also made landscapes. Bakufu is not associated with the sasuka-hanga or shin-hanga movements. He is in his own category. The artist very loosely organized and watched over the production of his prints.

Ohno Bakufu passed away in 1976.

Another reason work by Ohno Bakufu is hard to define is that the artist did not employ text at all in his work. Many woodcut artists use text in their work, Bakufu avoided this process.


Artist of the moment……Billy Gauthier

Billy Gauthier is an Canadian artist born in the year 1978 in Happy Valley- Goose Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. Gauthier is of Metis and Inuit heritage. The artist grew up on the East Coast of Canada.

The artist works with various mixed media including antlers, ivory, whalebone, and serpentine.

Some influences include Kenojuak Ashevak and Kiawak Ashoona.

A large influence on Gauthier was his professional artist cousin named John Terriak. Terriak is renowned for his portraiture work. This piece is titled “Woman’s Face.” Even as a young child the artist enjoyed trying to capture the likeness and expression of the human face.

Billy Gauthier is now based out of Labrador, Canada.

The artist had his first solo breakthrough show in 2010.

Artist of the moment…….Hoon Kwak

Hoon Kwak is a contemporary artist born in the year 1941 on Dageau, Korea, now known as South Korea. For his collegiate education Kwak attended Seoul University and earned a bachelors of fine arts degree. Kwak moved to the United States for post graduate studies at both the University of California at Long Beach. Kwak is associated with the modernism movement.

Kwak works with sculpture, installations, painting, and calligraphy. A recurring theme in the artist’s work is Buddhism.

Hoon Kwak has exhibited his art at the National Art Museum of China.

The artist participated in the Venice Biennale in 1995.
