Artist of the moment……Martin Puryear

Martin Puryear is an African-American artist renowned for his sculptures and printmaking talents. Martin Puryear was born in the year 1941 in the District of Columbia of the United States. For his collegiate education Puryear attended the Catholic University of America located in Washington D.C. Puryear was originally a biology student before switching to the arts.  The artist also studied abroad at the Royal Academy of Art located in Stockholm, Sweden. For his postgraduate work Puryear attended the Yale University of Art of School of Art and Architecture.

For his sculpture work Puryear employs wood, metal, wire, and stone.

Puryear became an international star after competing and winning the Grand Prize at the Sao Paulo Brazil Biennale.

The artist’s first chosen medium was wood. Even when in school in Sweden Puryear was fascinated by the art of basket weaving.

Puryear has been a past winner of the MacArthur Foundation Award.

Martin Puryear is included in the the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery in Washington D.C.
