Artist of the moment…….Felix Ziem

Felix Ziem was a French artist  born in the year 1821 in Buene, Cote D’Or, Burgundy, France. Ziem was a brilliant painter of landscape and marine images. Some of his most renown work was done in Venice, Italy. Ziem is associated with the French Barbizon style of painting.  The landscapes he painted most were of the Venice and the French countryside, in particular the Burgundy region where the artist was raised.

For his collegiate education Felix Ziem studied architecture in Dijon, France.

Ziem worked as an architect before turning to art.

First showed his art at the Paris Salon in 1849. After this he was financially set as an artist.

Like other very successful artists including John Singer Sargent, Ziem was avid art collector and enjoyed helping up and coming or struggling artists by purchasing their work.

In England you might be knighted for your contributions to the art world, in France you are asked to join the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

The artist passed away in 1911 at the age of 90 years old.

In this clip we visit a show in France. Though its in English, I found these picture images to be very high quality. From a distance the gallery show reminded of works by the famous landscape painter, Claude Lorraine.

Price range information: Most works priced between $10,000 and $100,000.

In this clip we view a Venice with wonderful romantic lighting at auction:

Ziem was a remarkable painter of light!  I enjoy his scenes that are painted during dusk with very limited light and interesting silhouette shapes. I really enjoy paintings of Venice and other artists who do a great job at painting it include John Singer Sargent and Thomas Pradzynski.

Saumik also enjoyed working with other traditional Inuit characters including the shaman and drum dancers.

Saumik lived in the Inukjuak, Nunavut Territory, Canada region.
