Artist of the moment……Robert Hamilton Blackburn

Robert Hamilton Blackburn was an African American artist born in Summit, New Jersey in the year 1920. The artists parents had come o to the United States from the country of Jamaica. As a youngster he spent much of his childhood in Harlem.

At the Harlem Art Center he become exposed to the world of fine arts. The center was run by the government arm the WPA, or Works Progress Administration. It was Robert Blackburn first learned the art of printing lithographs.

In the 1940s Robert Blackburn began to study at New York City’s famed Art Student’s League. He was a great friend to artist Will Barnet. The two had an idea to form a co-op with fellow artists in order to keep their printmaking dream on going. Due to the success of this program Robert Blackburn won a Governor’s Award.

The artist won a MacArthur Fellowship Grant.

The artist passed away in 2003.
