Artist of the moment…..Raymond Jonson

Raymond Jonson was an American modernist born in 1891 in the city of Chariton, Iowa. For his artistic education Jonson attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Jonson also attended the Chicago Art Institute.

In the beginning of his career the artist was based out of Chicago. A major influence was the artist Bror a.k.a. as B.J.O. Nordfeldt, who was a modernist painter that moved to America from Sweden.  Below an example of Nordfeldt’s style.


Jonson is renown as the founder of the Transcendental Painters Group of Sante Fe, New Mexico. The artist relocated to this region in the mid 1920s. He founded the Transcendental Painters Group in 1938.

Jonson was a longtime professor at the University of New Mexico located in Albuquerque.

A major influence on Jonson was the painter Wassily Kandinsky and his infamous Armory show in Chicago of 1912. This clip talks about this show and many works of Jonson are featured.

Raymond Johnson passed away in 1982 at the age of 91 years old.

Artist of the moment….Jay Simeon

Jay Simeon is a Northwest Coast Haida artist born in the year 1976 in  Fort McLeod, Alberta, Canada. His father was from the Haida nation (northwest coast artist)  and his mother from the Blackfoot nation (plains Indian artist .)  Simeon is very diverse in his mediums as he paints, carves, is a printmaker and makes jewelry.

price range information: Works range from $9,000 to $20,000.

Simeon was able to learn some basic Haida design methods from a first cousin named Sharon Hitchcock, who shared his Haida background and love of the Haida style of art. Simeon has been practicing Haida art since 1990.

For his artistic education Simeon attended Vancouver Community College. This is where he learned the most about jewelry making.

Artist of the moment……Richard Yarde

Richard Yarde is an African American artist born in the year 1939  in Boston, Massachusetts. He was renown for his work depicting mainly African- American people dancing. A great draughtsman who enjoyed painting the figure. In addition to the figure Yarde was renown for his work with the medium of watercolor. He occasionally worked in oils.

Yarde was an outstanding painter of fabrics and clothes.

For his artistic education Yarde attended Boston University earning both a bachelors and masters of fine arts degree.

Yarde is part of the teaching faculty at the University of Massachusetts located in Amherst, Massachusetts.

The artist lives and works out of Northampton, Massachusetts.

Recipient of an award from the National Academy of Art and Letters.

Included in many prominent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Boston Museum of Art.


Artist of the moment…..Paul Villinski

Paul Villinski is an American artist  born in the year 1960 in York, ,Maine. Villinski  is a mixed media and installation artist. He was born to a family whose father was an air force pilot. Using found or recycled materials from his own collection the artist main subject is butterflies. He creates them from items such as used records and also beer cans. He often employs the butterflies as a group engaging in an activity such as transporting a plane, or coming together to create a certain shape with the negative space created by the group.

For his artistic education Villinski attended the Massachusetts College of Art located in Boston, Massachusetts. He went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree from Cooper Union College located in New York City.
