Artist of the moment….Japanese Artist Mr…a.k.a. Iwamoto Masakatu

Mr. is a contemporary artist born Iwamoto Masakatu in Cupa, Japan in the year 1969.  He is among the top “celebrity” Pop art painters of the culture. His works blend many ideas from manga to realism and he works in many mediums including acrylics, photography,  watercolor, video, and sculpture.  For his artistic education Mr. attended the Sokei Art School in Tokyo, Japan.

Whilst still a student he was able to meet the current leader of the Pop Art movement in Japan at the time, Takashi Murakami. Murakami served as a great mentor.

The information contained in his art comes from a variety of sources including manga, science fiction, and even video games.

Masakatu went to work for Murakami and joined his staff.

Mr. currently lives and works out of Saitama, Tokyo.

Has been part of many exhibitions around the globe including Paris,  London, New York City, Tokyo, Chicago, and Miami.

Artist of the moment…..Andrew Myers…

Andrew Myers is a wonderful contemporary artist known more for the medium he works in, screws! Many works by Andrew Myers have thousands of screws involved in the work. Many large portraits that involve only the head and neck can involve 8,000 to 10,000 screws!

Andrew Myers was born in Braunshweig, Germany. He grew in Spain. Andrew Myers currently resides Laguna Beach, California. For his collegiate education Myers attended the what used to be called the Art Institute of Southern California ( now called the Laguna College of Art and Design.)

Myers spends  2 to 3 hours per day working with his screws.

The base for his work is plywood.

Artist of the moment…..photographer George Rodger

George Rodger was a fantastic photographer born in  Cheshire, Great  Britain the year 1908. Rodger was renown for his work with the African and Pygmi people. For his artistic education Rodger attended St. Bee’s College in Cumbria, United Kingdom.

Was employed by the BBC’s The Listener magazine working as a photographer.

Rodger traveled the world and did work in Iran, Burma, Italy, and Africa. Whilst in Italy Rodger met and befriended Robert Capa. Later Rodger would join Capa and other famous photographers in starting Magnum Photos. This company is internationally renown for its photography around the globe. Here is a link to their website:

Rodger was among the first people to witness the liberation of countries like Belgium, and he also was the first person to photograph a Nazi concentration camp. This was the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Made an honorable Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Rodger passed away in 1995 at the age of 87 years old.

Artist of the moment……Francoise Oklaga

Francoise Oklaga was a great Inuit printmaker born in Coral Harbour, Nunavet Territory, Canada in the year 1924.

Oklaga passed away in Baker Lake, Nunavet Territory, Canada in 1991 at the age of 67 years old. Her brother was the famous artist Pudlo Pudlat whom I have covered previously.

From 1981 to 1990 the artist participated in seven annual Baker Lake print collections.

In addition to graphic arts she was also great at working with fabrics.

Artist of the moment…..Photographer Candida Hofer

Candida Hofer is a photographer born in  Eberswalde, Germany in 1944. For her artistic education the artist attended Kunstakadamie in Dusseldorf. Her father was a famous journalist that was employed by the Nazi party and responsible for a large amount of its propaganda. The artist is known for love of architecture and large empty spaces when it comes to shooting interior scenes.

Candida Hofer started out her photography career as a portrait photographer working for newspapers.

Another well liked series was done on zoos in Europe. Images like the giraffe in the gallery.

The artist also did a great series concentrating on the design and interior of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Was a student of the Becher family. I wrote about this family a short time ago, they were famous for photographing industrial images for example a coal mine or a water tower. Most of their students worked in black and white, Candida Hofer was one of few students that worked with color.

First solo exhibition was in 1975 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Artist of the moment……Ron English

Ron English was born in Houston, Texas in the year 1960. English is renown for his use of modern Surrealist that uses mixes well known consumer brands  with a Pop Art twist with works using the face of Elvis Presley.  English not only paints but produces photography and is a musician.

In this clip English talks about Surrealism and Pop- Art.

For his artistic education English earned a bachelor’s of fine arts degree from the University of Texas.  The artist went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of North Texas.

The artist started out by remaking local billboards for his photography. This grew into using the billboards to express his social view points.

Included in prominent museum collections including the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art located in Paris, France, and the Museum Checkpoint Charlie located in Berlin, Germany.

First major exhibit was Art on the Run in New York City in the 1989.

In this clip the artist talks about how on a certain day of the year the authorities look the other way and English is able to change billboards to his design without worrying about breaking the law.

And here we visit Ron English during comic-con New York City in 2012. He talks about using his modern skill set to revisit ideas and themes he tried to produce without much success as a young person.

Artist of the moment….Tim Pitsiulak

Tim Pitsiulak is a fantastic Inuit graphic artist born in the Kimmirut, Lake Harbor area of Canada in the year 1967.  The artist has tried other mediums such as sculpture and making jewelry.

Pitsiulak now resides in the Cape Dorset, Nunavet Territory, Canada.

At first he started working with animals and now includes man made items such as planes and boats. The artist also enjoys working with the whale as subject matter.

Pitsiulak is proud to tell the world who inspired him to become an artist, his wonderful aunt the master printmaker Kenojuak Ashevak. I have posted about her already. She was renown for her prints with wildlife and passed away in 2013. Kenojuak was included in the first Cape Dorset print series.

To close we will look at some very recent works done by Pitsiulak that deal with man made items such as a four wheeler and an airplane.

Artist of the moment……Andre Butzer

Andre Butzer is a contemporary artist working in a genre sometimes called science fiction expressionism. When I look at his art I am reminded of the wonderful expressionist Edward Munch, famous for “The Scream.” Butzer was born in Stuttgart, Germany in the year 1973.

price range information: Original works range $15,000 to $45,000.

Some influences were Willem De Kooning and Phillip Guston.

Started exhibiting in 1999.

In this clip we visit our art loving friend James Kalm for an exhibition featuring Andre Butzer. Kalm is a walking history of the New York art scene.

Artist of the moment….James Nares

James Nares is a fantastic British painter born in London, England in the year 1953. When you think of his work “time capule” should jump into your head. Nares tries to capture the EXACT moment an object was created.  Nares uses a variety of unique materials such as thermoplastic on linen or iridescent pigment and wax on linen.  Nares most renown works show the trail of a paintbrush dipped in one tone and drug across the canvas.

In this clip we visit a gallery show given in 2009.

For his artistic education Nares attended the Chelsea School of Art located in London, England. Nares also attended the School of Visual Arts located in New York City.

Currently lives and works out of New York City after moving here in 1974.

James Nares has also made some movies and was part of the New York underground film scene in the 1970s.

In this lovely clip we visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and stroll down the streets of the big Apple. A wonderful installation work!

Artist of the moment….Rhee Ki-Bong

Rhee Ki-Bong is a wonderful contemporary artist born in 1957 in what is now South Korea. The artist  renown for his work with trees painted on resin. In addition to paintings the artist also enjoys installation work.

For his work the artist tries to show an equal focus on both the fleeting moments we have in our daily lives that are beautiful and serene with a alongside what is already beautiful, such as the shape of a tree. He does a great job at capturing emotion with his works.

For his artistic education the Ki-Bong attended Seoul National University earning both a bachelors and masters diploma.

Has been a professor at Korea University in the Fine Arts Department.

In this clip we visit an installation in which a book of philosophy made of leather  is thrown into an aquarium.  From the Singapore Biennale in 2008.

I enjoy his work with trees that are often painted on resin the most. The absence of color lets the viewer picture themselves in the environment, very similar to the photographer Ansel Adams. If you like this moody and atmospheric works make sure and check out artist Robert Kipniss, a master print maker who enjoys using tones to make spectacular renditions of middle town America at times when the setting is quiet and serene. Below an example of the style of Robert Kipniss.
