Artist of the moment……Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer is an artist born in Gallipolis, Ohio that is world renown for stating her ideas and thoughts about feminism and politics though visually stimulating text. At first the artist used the popular poster as a way to express her ideas. As with anything else technology came along and now she has a very unique way of organizing her displays.

For her collegiate studies Holzer attended the Rhode Island School of Design.

She has a  very high business IQ with many mediums stating her ideas from plaques, digital signs, LED signs, stone benches, footstools, stickers, t shirts, and paintings.  One very cool object the artist got to design was a Le Mans racing car. I have showcased other artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein who also did the same thing. Below is Jenny Holzer’s BMW!

In this clip from Art21, the series done by public television often recommended here, we listen a brief interview featuring Jenny Holzer.

A brief montage of works by Jenny Holzer.

And now we visit a show at the Tate in Liverpool, England.

Another genre explored by Holzer is that of the past wars of the United States in the Middle East. Yet another artist that chose to use maps as part of her work. This makes three artists in just a few days of writing. Holzer found documents and maps of Baghdad and how to invade Iraq. She also used information from the National Security Archive to bring a personal side to her art by taking actual words from interrogations and even confessions.

Jenny Holzer has helped to produce seven books!

You probably have seen the artists work if you have been to big cities like New York and even Oslo, Norway. I think of her as Ms. Las Vegas for her clever way of mixing text, to me all of her work looks like an advertisement, which is exactly what the culture contains at the moment.

Jenny Holzer was the first woman ever to represent the United States in the Venice, Biennale in 1990.

Artist of the moment…..Federico Uribe

Federico Uribe is a fantastic mixed media artist that challenges the viewer to think not only about the design of the subject, but also the medium. Federico Uribe was born in Bogata, Colombia in the year 1962. A great example of using not only the subject but the medium to explore an idea would be a series done by Uribe that featured a rainforest that was constructed entirely of puma shoes and shoe laces! What a statement! Most of the works in the gallery are examples of the medium most associated with the artist, colored pencils.

Some other mediums he has worked with have been dominos, for a dominatrix type of female torso. The man lying in the bed in the work titled SICK in the gallery is made out of shoelaces and push pins. Uribe has also produced wonderful still life and interior scenes using cables! What clever and unique mediums that reminded of the multi media master the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz.

For his collegiate studies Uribe attended the University of Los Andes located in Bogata. Uribe went on to earn a MFA from the State University of New York.

In this clip we listen to a great interview featuring Federico Uribe.

Artist of the moment….Photographer Massimo Vitali

Here is a fantastic photographer to review on these beginning days of warmer temps! Massimo Vitali is a world renown Italian photographer that was born in Como, Italy in the year 1944. Vitali captures groups and very large groups of people at leisure, many times large masses of people at the beach or some other large body of water. To get his somewhat birds eye view, he shoots his images from a platform that varies from 12 to 15 feet above the ground.

Price range information: Total price range is $2,000 to $90,000. A fair amount of work is available in the $3,000 to $10,000 range.

A brief interview with the Italian Master.

Here we visit a show from 2011 and 2012.

When it comes to painting the beach and its leisure crowd without a doubt my favorite artist is Hilo Chen. A great artist who paints wonderful flesh tones. Below is an example of Chen’s photo realist style.
