Nay took off for Rome in the 1930s and experimented with Surrealist painting.
After winning a grant from the painter Munch he painted in Norway.
Nay participated in a show that some important critics hated. As a result he was forbidden to paint any longer. In 1940 he was drafted into service in the German Armed Forces. Nay was sent to France where he made friends with a sculptor that allowed Nay to work in his studio any time he chosr.Nay could work at improving his art in private.
Nay passed away in 1968.
