This post was meant to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and a wonderful painter born in Edinburgh, Scotland in the year 1962 named Callum Innes. The artist attended Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland. He went on to earn a bachelors degree in art from Edinburgh College. After some exhibits in the 80s and early 90s Innes got his break in 1992 with shows at the ICA featuring contemporary art and the Scottish Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1995 Innes was nominated for the Turner Prize but lost to Damien Hirst.

As we learned via Homare Ikeda,abstraction is best when it contains different applications of paint. Even Jackson Pollack became known for his style of drips rather certain paintings. Innes is unique in that his method of painting is called unpainting. He paints colors strongly, then goes about removing paint using washes of turpentine. The artist refers to these works as Exposed paintings and this series of paintings brought the artist a great deal of critical acclaim.

Price range information: Innes worked mainly in oils, his method was unpainting. These works range from $8000 to $85,000. Occassionally he produced etchings ranging from $1000 to $2000. He also produced watercolors works but not enough ars available to form a pricing schedule.
