Artist of the moment….the Buckner family Walker and son Derek….

I enjoy to read about families that encourage artistic talents and creativity from a young age. I have documented many families that have had multiple generations of families like the Wyeths, the Gruppe, and Saar families. Today we look at the father son combination of Derek and Walker Buckner. Sorry, no price range information available.

Walker Buckner was born in 1943 in New York, New York. He is a great painter of the figure and landscape. Check out this wonderful female figurative work made by Walker Buckner. Walker studied at many well known institutions such the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. In addition the artist studied business at Yale and Columbia Law and Business Schools.

For me I see much more a connection and comparison with the landscape paintings of the Buckner duo. Here are some fantastic examples of landscapes by Walker Buckner. I enjoy looking at these more non traditional landscapes as the more traditional objects found in a landscape painting such as trees, buildings, rocks, and or people have been reduced to seeing fields of color. You will see no blending of edges or mixing of greys here, just plain simple color fields.

and another wonderful offering from Walker Buckner.

With his unique way of looking at the landscape as fields of color rather than certain objects Walker Buckner reminds me of the great artist Richard Mayhew. Mayhew was born in the early 1920s and rose to prominence as one of few artists of color working on a national level back in the 1950s and 1960s. In this example you can see how the picture has been reduced to flat fields of color and rather than trying to create a certain scene, Mayhew is trying to portray a certain mood of warmth and calmness, at least from my vantage point.

And now on to Derek Buckner.

In this clip we see a show featuring the artist at the George Billis gallery.

In this briefing a chose to compare the works of father and son and their similar views on composition and color palette. Derek Buckner has painted some tremendous scenes of ordinary city life. By that I mean he has taken the normal grey from smoke and pollution buildings and made a wonderful work of art. Another artist who is tremendously skilled at portraying the industrial life of the big city is Nicholas Evans- Cato. First we have a Derek Buckner painting here.

Lets take a look at some more paintings by Buckner that the influence his father had on developing his painting style.

Derek Buckner was born in 1970 and grew up hanging out in his fathers art studio. For his artistic education Derek Buckner attended the Art Institute of Chicago.

At LaGuardia high school he studied stone carving.

Married to an author named Joanna Hershon. The book below is coming out in May of this year and is by Hershon.

Derek Buckner splits his time painting the beaches of Mexico and the urban life of New York city, the first painting in the gallery is of the famous Coney Island amusment park.

Hope you enjoyed this look at the Buckner family. Be sure and check out the many other painting families I have written about from the Bosschaerts to the Peales, they are all fascinating to read about!
