Artist of the moment….Cuban artist Jose Bedia Valdes….

The artist was born in January of 1959 in Havana, Cuba.

The artist went thru many years of schooling, high school and college ages, in Havana as well. In 1991 he emigrated to Mexico.  In 1993 he moved to the United States. He now lives and works out of Miami, Florida.

The artist served in the Cuban military, living in Angola. He was able to introduce a very primative feel to his artwork after this experience.

Bedia has worked in many mediums including collage, acrylics, ink, pastel, oils, and chalk.

The artist has been in many international group shows from Beijing to Venice. The artist won a Guggenheim Fellowship award in 1993.

high price range: $18,000

I enjoy this artist for his expressionistic quality of his work. A cross between the cave paintings found in Lascaux, France and the Neo-Expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. The line work  is simple, but communicate well to the viewer. Also interesting is the use of dark vs. light shapes.

Part of many musuem collections including the Tampa Bay Museum of Art, Miami Art Museum, and Los Angeles Country Museum of Art.
